Late Bloomers in Sport: What is a late bloomer and what to do about it.
A late bloomer is an athlete that matures at a slower pace than other athletes. In elementary up to high school it’s very apparent. The athlete that matures early and has more coordination, strength, height, etc. has a distinct advantage. Michael Jordan is probably the poster child for late bloomers that went on to be the GOAT. He was placed on the JV team basketball team as a sophomore. He was 5’9 and not yet varsity material. One year later he had a grown 4 inches and had spent hours upon hours of practice. He made the varsity team and the rest is history.
I was a late bloomer in sports so I am very committed and sensitive to this issue. It’s easy as a coach or elite natural athlete to shrug off the late bloomer. Well…you just aren’t working hard enough, or you just don’t want it bad enough.
Many coaches won’t even spend time with late bloomers or lower tier performing athletes because they want to win at all costs. This is sad and non productive. Some really great athletes were late bloomers ie. Michael Jordan, Brandon Bulsworth, etc.
